The Watershed Resources Specialist position assists with the overall protection, operation, and maintenance of the Los Vaqueros Watershed and adjacent District owned lands (19,380 acres, including a 1,500- acre reservoir). In this position, you will maintain land stewardship by protecting valuable natural and cultural resources; monitor and report upon all environmental variables, protected species and their habitats; monitor and supervise the operation and maintenance of the watershed infrastructure and facilities; direct and conduct watershed management activities in the field; direct, monitor, and participate in wildland law enforcement and fire prevention and suppression activities, watershed recreation, and public interpretive and education programs. Candidate will also manage contracts with consultants and vendors who provide environmental services, recreation operation, maintenance and improvement services, and watershed-related agreements with agencies such as law enforcement and emergency medical response services. The candidate will supervise up to three technical staff involved in various aspects of environmental monitoring and watershed protection.

QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in watershed, environmental, natural resources, wildlife, forestry, or biological or zoological sciences and four years of experience in land management and the administration of natural resources, conducting environmental mitigation studies, and the operation and administration of wildland recreation programs. Additional experience must include environmental protection, land stewardship, land use administration, resource management, wild land fire protection, and wild land law enforcement. Candidate must have knowledge of principles of ecology, rangeland, watershed, wild land recreation, wildlife, fisheries, forestry and natural resource or agricultural sciences and management. Candidate must be in possession of, or have the ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license, receive a certification of completion for CPR and first aid within 6 months of date of hire, and a certification of completion of PC 832 “A” Powers of Arrest Course within 12 months of date of hire. 19 August, 2008: WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT INTERNS (2), San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex, Fremont, CA
The San Francisco Bay NWR Complex is seeking two interns for the fall season to assist refuge biologists with monitoring endangered species and conducting habitat enhancement on four refuges within the San Francisco Bay area. Responsibilities include: monitoring the threatened Western snowy plover, participating in plover habitat enhancement, California clapper rail surveys, collecting and planting native seed, tending seedlings in nursery, invasive weed removal, data entry, report preparation, weed mapping using GPS unit, working with staff and volunteers, commuting to satellite refuges (1 to 1.5 hour drive time), early mornings and late evenings, some weekends.
Dates: Positions start September 15, 2008 and end mid-December 2008.
Stipend: $100/week plus shared on-site housing
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology or related field (or minimum three years in a degree program), a valid driver's license, good wildlife observation and plant identification skills, comfort driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, ability to work in harsh weather, basic computer skills.

Incumbent will serve as a wildlife technician responsible in assisting the Natural Resources Manager in the day to day operation of a complex Integrated Natural Resources Management Program. This will include preparing Power Point Presentations, coordinating regulatory and Mission Driven meeting support and facilitation. Incumbent will be expected to conduct daytime and nighttime field surveys in the harsh west desert environment including mist net trapping for 18 species of bat, kit fox trapping, radio collar work, setting and maintaining small mammal trapping grids, trapping and tracking Mule Deer, kit fox, eagles, and other avian community members. Incumbent will require an extensive knowledge of the Great Basin flora, fauna and habitat requirements and be willing to assist with every aspect of running the NR program at Dugway Proving Ground. Data analysis of ongoing wildlife and plant species studies will be performed and knowledge of common statistical techniques is critical to successfully supporting projects and expected NR Program deliverables. Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship Station experience (MAPS), PIT tagging, radio collar tracking experience, and the ability to work with a diverse group of field technicians in intense data collection settings and overall an ability to get the job done are desired within the incumbents skill set. Office work will include full support of the Natural Resources Manager and the incumbent will be asked to maintain data base fields, compliance tracking applications, correspondence logs, and assist with the preparation of technical material for higher authority. A thorough working knowledge of MS Office and specifically MS Word, Access, Excel, and Power Point is mandatory. This is a one year position with the possibility of renewal up to 3 years.

Audubon California's Starr Ranch Sanctuary in Trabuco Canyon, CA solicits applicants for positions as field assistants with our artichoke thistle control and needlegrass grassland/coastal sage scrub restoration project. This is a research-based program to control the invasive species, Cynara cardunculus (artichoke thistle), without chemicals and restore to rare native habitat. Must work well with people as part of a field crew who work on mechanical and physical removal of artichoke thistle and all aspects of invasive species control and restoration including non-chemical control of other invasive species, native seed collection and planting, experimental tests of weed removal and restoration techniques, and quantitative monitoring. Experience in plant sampling in the field desirable. Enthusiasm for working outdoors. Opportunity to live on our 4000-acre Sanctuary. Positions start in either October or November, 2008 or January 2009 and run six months from start dates.
Salary: $350/week plus housing (private rooms).

Duties:
Routinely shares activities with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Deputy Wildlife Refuge Manager by serving as Acting Wildlife Refuge Manager during the Refuge Manager’s absence. Serves as a member or the Refuge Leadership Team at the National Bison Range. Supervises a multi-disciplinary staff (e.g., maintenance, biological, fire and some visitor services) in the administration of refuge programs which includes preparing performance plans, conducting personnel evaluations, preparing performance awards, determining annual training needs for subordinate staff. Responsible for the operational aspects of the coordination, planning, implementation, and administration of activities associated with a refuge/wetland management district. Oversees the care and management of wild ungulates (bison, elk, deer, bighorn sheep and other species) in a refuge setting, including observation of animals’ general health, disease symptoms, behavior and activities to determine animal husbandry needs for specific animals or populations. Develops and carries out active stewardship of natural resources beyond the boundaries of the Refuge Complex units to improve or safeguard units of the National Wildlife Refuge System and to enhance or protect trust resources over large geographic areas.
DUTIES CONTINUED:
Plans, schedules, attend and conduct meetings with elected officials (Tribal, local, county, state, legislators and Congressional staff), varying levels of government units (tribal, local, county, local and federal), interest groups (landowners, county and state farm bureaus, local, state, and national environmental groups). Provides information, discusses issues, resolves problems, and receives public input on the status of existing, developing, or proposed refuges. Assists with planning and directing a comprehensive public relations/public use program to provide optimum information, education, interpretation and wildlife-dependant recreation. Assists with direction of a variety of specialized disciplines or programs, biological monitoring and management, fire management, land acquisition, refuge maintenance, endangered and threatened species management, and/or contaminant cleanup or remediation. Actively supports and implements the equal opportunity program as specified in National, Regional, Tribal and local affirmative action plans. Recruits, trains and supervises and counsels a diverse permanent staff of resource professionals, temporary staff and volunteers, regarding team building, tolerance, and other appropriate and necessary issues. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (AS REFLECTED ON THE TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION)
A Master’s degree in the field of Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, with specific coursework in mammal and bird identification, plant identification, wildlife ecology, wetland ecology, plant ecology, and general wildlife biology. Demonstrated direct experience in wildlife and wildlife habitat research, data entry and statistical analysis, and compilation of scientific research reports is essential. In addition, no less than five years of proven relevant experience in the areas of personnel supervision and program/project oversight is required Demonstrated knowledge of or experience in wildlife and plant identification, and project design and planning is necessary. Proven ability to function well in a wide variety of interpersonal situations is mandatory. A high degree of proficiency and experience in technical writing is an integral component of the position. The position requires coordination of a substantial amount of knowledge, training, skills and abilities to complete major projects on time and with a high degree of professional quality and skill. Must possess or be eligible for a Montana Driver's License and is required to have an annual doctor’s physical examination and a signed doctor’s statement that the incumbent can perform all of the physical tasks listed in this position description. Duties:
Serves as a member or the Refuge Leadership Team at the National Bison Range. Plans, organizes, collects, and analyzes biological data and prepares reports to achieve management objectives pertaining to wildlife populations, lands and water management. Recommends population and habitat management practices based on proven practices, field observations and analysis of data. Oversees data management and analyses using GPS and GIS technology. Monitors, evaluates, and writes reports describing biological results of management practices on the refuge complex and prepares correspondence relating to results. This involves collecting basic data from field surveys and investigations, researching published technical sources of information, reviewing data and reports from the refuge and other agency files and conducting discussions with biologists from other agencies. Coordinates biological research on the refuge by proposing and designing research studies or soliciting research by universities to obtain information necessary to achieve management objectives. Assists or directs other refuge personnel in a variety of duties such as weed control, manipulation of water levels, management of grazing, fencing, watering developments, and various administrative tasks.
DUTIES CONTINUED:
Responsible for submission of necessary reporting requirements such as wildlife inventory plans, annual reports, bird banding lab reports, banding schedules, vegetation monitoring and input into the Refuge Management Information System. Coordinates with the Flathead Irrigation Project to maximize wildlife opportunities on Ninepipe and Pablo National Refuges. Assists with the Comprehensive Conservation Plan preparation as a member of the core team and by drafting assigned sections of planning document. Provides visitor assistance and assists with the public use/environmental education program. Assists in record-keeping, handling, trapping, vaccinating, tagging and moving of bison, elk, and other wildlife species. Works with care and management of wild ungulates (bison, elk, deer, bighorn sheep and other species) in a refuge setting, including observation of animals’ general health, disease symptoms, behavior and activities to determine animal husbandry needs for specific animals or populations. Coordinates genetic testing and data collection related to ongoing genetic analysis and DNA analysis. Coordinates Youth Conservation Corps, Montana Human Resources, and Montana Conservation Corps programs with other refuge activities. Recruits and selects enrollees and youth leaders, plans projects, procures supplies, maintains budget, conducts safety and environmental education sessions, organizes daily work, completes administrative reports. Directs the work of one Wildlife Biologist, and other full-time, seasonal or temporary biological technicians and volunteers as assigned. Prepares draft proposals and applies for cost share funding and grants for projects to accomplish station biological objectives. Conducts other tasks, as assigned by designated supervisory personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (AS REFLECTED ON THE TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION)
A Master’s degree in the field of Wildlife Biology or Wildlife Management, with specific coursework in mammal and bird identification, plant identification, wildlife ecology, wetland ecology, plant ecology, and general wildlife biology. Demonstrated direct experience in wildlife and wildlife habitat research, data entry and statistical analysis, and compilation of scientific research reports is essential. In addition, no less than five years of progressively responsible experience in the areas of wildlife management, personnel supervision and program/project oversight is required. DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a Biological / Avian Technician for a research project in the northern San Joaquin Valley of California. This position is part of an ongoing collaborative study looking at the hydrologic and biologic effects of a modified wetland hydrology. Our program includes avian surveys, wetland habitat surveys, and water quality monitoring. Summer duties will include assistance with an on-going wetland habitat monitoring project. Responsibilities consist of conducting vegetation ground truth surveys, wetland habitat delineation utilizing GPS and survey grade mapping equipment, wetland restoration area delineation, soil core and seed production clip sampling. Fall and early winter responsibilities will include the collection of water quality data, water quality sensor calibration, and sensor maintenance. Avian area search surveys will be conducted during early fall, late winter and spring in order to monitor avian usage of wetlands. Caltrans and the Service are looking for a biologist to work in the Sacramento Fish and Wildlife Service Office reviewing proposed and existing Caltrans projects in the San Joaquin Valley for their effects on endangered species. The person will work for a consulting firm that has a mulit-year contract with Caltrans, but will be supervised, and will perform the duties of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist. This has been a highly successful method of addressing workload and budget constraints (and is not as complicated as it sounds).
Species affected include plants, crustaceans, herps and mammals. Our research is focused on the recovery of Peninsular bighorn sheep, which were federally listed as endangered in 1998. JOB DESCRIPTION: A hardworking, dedicated individual with good fieldwork, writing and computer skills is needed immediately to fill the position of field biologist. This is a full time, permanent position with a combination of fieldwork and office work. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to tracking radio-collared bighorn via foot, caring for the captive herd of Peninsular bighorn, data entry, writing field reports, letters and newsletter articles, correspondence with members, general public, and resource agencies.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: B.S. or B.A. in biological sciences or related field. The successful applicant must be in very good physical condition and able to hike in a harsh desert environment where summer temperatures can exceed 110 F. Applicant must be willing to work long hours and perform a wide variety of tasks. Flexibility, a positive attitude and the ability to work independently as well as in team situations are essential. Telemetry, mapping, and GPS skills are desirable along with good writing skills and proficiency with Word, Excel, and Access.
