We are hosting the first of a two-part training for general membership of the Western Section of The Wildlife Society. This training series, facilitated by Daedra Staten of Staten Consulting Group, will focus on the history of identity in the United States, paying specific attention to race and racism.

We will explore racial formation (the intentional creation of race as a means of supporting the Colonial European Slave Economy) as well as the racialization of various groups of people, including immigrants from Europe, Asia, and Latin America, enslaved Africans, and Indigenous Americans, to name a few. We will also talk about how this history has translated into the present-day lived realities of many in the form of racism, systemic oppression, bias, and microaggressions. We will discuss how all of these phenomena impact everyday issues like hiring, promotion (or lack thereof), representation in news and media, interactions with the criminal justice system, educational and health outcomes, and more.

There will be opportunities to break out into smaller groups where you will discuss your own lived experience and how these issues impact you professionally and personally. We will additionally work in small groups to deconstruct our own ideas about identity and to think through how to tackle issues of racism, oppression, and marginalization as they arise in real time.

This two-part training promises to be a jam-packed educational opportunity. It’s not to be missed. We can’t wait to see you there!

Testimonial: The Western Section board took this 2-part anti-racism and inclusion training in 2023 and it was fantastic. As someone who has been interested and involved in diversity, equity, and inclusion for many years, I have taken other diversity trainings. This one was different, I felt like it was very informative and delivered in an interesting way and we were all on the edge of our seats. It is tough material and a significant effort to get through, but you totally get back what you invest into it, and more. Board members who took the training came out with a better understanding of antiracism and the work that we need to continue.

After going through the experience of taking the training myself, I am thrilled that the Western Section is providing it to all members of the Section. I really hope you take advantage of this incredible opportunity. Our section is investing in this training which will help us build community and give us tools to empower people historically marginalized within the wildlife profession. Sign up to show your solidarity and commitment, you wont regret it. — Thea Wang, Western Section Diversity Committee Chair
